How to Talk Your Way Out of a Speeding Ticket

How to Talk Your Way Out of a Speeding Ticket

As Thanksgiving break approaches, tons of college students are hitting the road to head home for Turkey Day. It is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.  In turn, police and state troopers are having a field day pulling cars over left and right.

My own little sis just got written a beast of a speeding ticket on her way back from Tallahassee.  Whether you're on the way home, to a friends house, or boyfriend's, that's no way to start a vacation. In today's economy, who can afford a $100+ speeding ticket? There are much better things we could be spending our money on.

Luckily, there are some tricks that might get you out of a sticky situation with the 5-0's:

  • First of all, always be polite. No matter how much of a jerk the cop is or innocent you think you are, arguing will get you nowhere.
  • It could be potentially embarrassing, but saying you really have to go to the bathroom is said to work pretty well. It could definitely explain excessive speeding.
  • Make sure you have your engine off, radio off, window rolled down, and paperwork out by the time the cop approaches your car.
  • Cry. This one only works if you're a girl. If you're a guy they'll probably just laugh in your face.
  • Pull the sympathy card: You're on the way to see your dying grandparent, pregnant sister, etc. This could potentially give you a guilty conscience.
  • If you don't think you were going too much over the speed limit you can claim that you never saw a change in the speed limit sign and didn't realize how fast you were going. This could at least give you a reduction in the fine
  • If you're positive you're not in the wrong you can contest the speeding ticket in court, but since that costs money and time it's most likely not worth the effort.

Of course the best way is to not get pulled over in the first place, but it happens!
