Every once in a while, older alumni directors and faculty will attempt to "connect with the kids" and "get hip to what's happening" in the younger generation.
Sometimes, they should probably just quit while they're ahead.
Framingham State College sent out a donor letter that they hoped would catch the eye of their younger alumni. The 6,000 recent graduates were all targeted for not having already donated, but instead of a normal letter, the request had the word "Blah" interspersed through it. 137 times:
"With the recent economic downturn and loan crisis, it has become even more important for Framingham State College to receive your support. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah," one part of the letter read.
Surprisingly enough, students called, wrote, and emailed in a frenzy since then, saying that the letter "insulted their intelligence" and blah blah blah. The school sent out an apology for the letter, "which [they] called the first letter a 'misguided and embarrassing attempt to connect with alumni in a different way.'" However, it was noted that after the letter went out, the school received an extra $2000 from students who had never donated.
Alright, I'll admit, when I first read this story, I was like "LOL old people stop trying to get us", but I'm not going to lie: anyone that emailed and got all uppity about this letter may need to lighten up a bit. At least the school was trying to connect with you guys, and in a generation where we have a tendency to tune out half the stuff we hear anyway, I don't blame them for having a hard time.
