The University of Michigan Doesn't Care About Disabled People

First of all this title is faulty. Obviously, our University, specifically our hospital, does a lot of great work for people with disabilities. What the headline should say is our Athletic Department doesn't really care about disabled people.

The Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America (never mind the jokes that can be made about that name) is going to trial with the University over the number of wheelchair-accessible seats in the new stadium post-renovations. In case you weren't aware the University will spend $226m to renovate the Big House and add luxury boxes.
Apparently if a stadium gets altered under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, 1% of the seats must be wheelchair accessible. Currently we have 90, and there will be 282 after the renovation. As the Big house holds roughly half the population of the state of Michigan on game days, that obviously won't cut it.

Now according to our Athletic Department we aren't actually modifying the stadium, at least according to this act. I don't know much about law but if we can spend $226m and still not modify it according to this act, that's a pretty shitty act. Somehow the probability of our dear University shelling out some money here seems pretty high.

When I think of this article I think of AD Bill Martin sitting at his desk cursing disabled veterans for ruining his master plan for even higher profits. It makes me chuckle.
