U-Dub Says 'Fun Stops Here'

Living off campus is supposed to be a rite of passage into the real world. Not having to deal with power-hungry RA’s and skipping the dreaded housing lottery are just a few of the many perks of living off-campus. Unfortunately there is no longer much difference between living on campus and off at the University of Washington.

Because of the sudden bombardment of community complaints about university students, the University is now enforcing the behavior code off campus. A simple noise complaint from an annoying neighbor can now earn students a not-so-awesome meeting at the student conduct office and a visit from the police. Fantastic.

Penn State and CU Boulder have also adopted similar policies and have no qualms about enforcing them.

"Since most college students live off campus, colleges that want to be on top of discipline need to extend their reach beyond their own real estate.

To some, this may sound like an overreaching of university authority; to others, it's a teachable moment."

So students, forget about the crazy off-campus parties, because Washington and the townspeople are plotting against you. Well played, Washington, well played.

Isn't of the perks of living off campus supposed to be partying when you want to w/out fear of having to deal with campus officials because a crabby neighbor called the cops? Posted 09/05/2008 08:02 AMReply
