Joe the Plumber Wurzelbacher Related to Keating (of the Keating 5 Scandal), Owes Back Taxes

That Joe the Plumber guy sure was the perfect example of guy-next-door, just-wants-to-make-an-honest-living-without-excessive-taxes blue collardom. Or so the McCain advisers thought. Just as the McCain campaign failed to thoroughly vet Sarah Palin though, it also failed to thoroughly vet Joe the Plumber before McCain started dropping his name like he had Tourette Syndrome.

Evidently Joe the Plumber isn’t just any old Joe; he’s a relative of Charles Keating, the corporate giant who dragged John McCain into the Keating Five ethics scandal years ago. The Charles Keating that was jailed for duping clients into buying junk bonds and convicted of fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. The Charles Keating that went down with Lincoln Savings and Loan, a company which required a $2.6 billion bailout from the government. The Charles Keating that contributed $112,000 to McCain’s campaigning during the 1980’s, sent the Arizona senator on trips, and left McCain in Senate Ethics Committee hearings. Yes, Joe the Plumber is a relative of that Charles Keating.

According to the Eisenstadt Group, the media source that broke the story:

If Steve Schmidt had any hair left, I hear he would have been pulling it out tonight. He reportedly screamed at John’s debate prep team tonight (out of earshot of reporters, of course). “You idiots - he’s related to Charles Keating… of the Keating Five scandal!” They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Obviously, this realization is no ethical black mark on Joe the Plumber’s record (though his failure to pay taxes twice and lack of a plumbing license are questionable), so much as it makes apparent the McCain campaign’s utter incompetence when it comes to researching those it chooses to associate with. Like Freddie Mac consultant Rick Davis.

Just for your OWN edification, it is NOT true that this guy is somehow related to THE Charles Keating of the Keating 5....better check your facts before you post rubbish and gossip. You'll look like one of the childhood "gossip game" participants.

I can buy he's just loosely related and it wasn't even on his mind that he was related to anyone involved in the Keating 5 financial scandal. Six degrees of separation and all; God, I've had numerous of even stranger coincidences like that go on in my life. What is interesting though, is that Joe's issue was very hypothetical and the actual reality is that Joe would benefit from Obama's tax plan, even if he managed to buy a plumbing company and make record profits. Maybe that plan is pseudo socialism, but right now and for a while now, we clearly have had socialism for the rich and that's is just perverse. Consider too "Joe", we are talking about a 3% increase on people doing very very well... that is hardly "Soak the Rich" of FDR. Posted 10/17/2008 04:43 AMReply

You know what scares me is that Joe thinks that Obama was tiptoeing about his answer to him. I listened to that interview a bunch of times and I'm not hearing that. I'm hearing concise explaining of why you would tax the wealthier more and tax cutting the middle class or lower.
And it's correct if you have a happier better incomed lower base than you'll have more people willing to pay for services. That's smart business especially when we're in an economy now where people are holding on to their dollars tighter.
Hell even Warren Buffet the 3rd richest man in the world says he's not getting taxed enough. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/tax/article1996735.ece
He's Cleaning Lady gets taxed more than him!!!!
So anyone that thinks that we're not already in a f'uped social taxing system under the Bush Administration, save your breath. McCain Will keep the Bush Tax cuts he already said it. And as the person said before 3% increase big freakin deal... I just watched a recent video a couple days ago of the Fat Cats of New York literally a bunch of stockbrokers throwing a party and blowing wads of money on that day the market crashed like 900 points, they didn't care, said it was there normal lifestyle hell most of them were on the prepaid waiting list for a ferrari. C'mon these guys can afford the 3% and not blink an eye.

You know if you think about it logically this is smart to help promote small business and help by improving the quality of life of the consumer and customer not take away from that.
To me there is only one intelligent choice for the problems we face today and a strategical mind for what we face in the future. And I think this campaign is the trial by fire. Vote Barack Obama 08

The reason Obama cannot let loose of the "revenue" is simple - he plans to grow the government, and establish more middlemen to "spread the wealth". If he stopped the tax CREDITS to people who don't even PAY taxes, stopped rewarding people who CHOOSE to stay in dead end low paying jobs, or have handfuls of children they cannot afford - regardless of the training grants, etc....those who want to succeed will have more in their pockets, and Joe will be able to grow his business by serving those people. Related or not, here is a guy who is not a plumber and is not really named Joe. He only made $40k in 2006 so he is well below the level that would be affected by Obama's plan yet he is worried that he might not be able to buy a plumbing businees because the taxes that he doesn't bother to pay will be too high.

What will he be next week, Fred the Fireman?

His middle name is Joseph. At least he's not afraid to use it - unlike one of the presidential candidates we know. Posted 10/23/2008 01:43 AMReply
