Michigan Greek Mythology: The List

I know Greek life has a rich history, but come on.

50% of students at Michigan are Greek. And while it's true I make up all my statistics, the fact remains that Greek life will in some way influence a lot of you as freshmen. And as Welcome Week starts and you start going to parties with brothers and sisters trying to get you to join and Greek letters are swimming around your head like alphabet soup, I think it's only fair I present you with a list.

A ranking order of fraternities and sororities is purely a word of mouth thing. It changes from year to year and no one ever bothers to write it down. Well, I did. The best houses are on top, "best" generally meaning the hottest collection of guys or girls, and how fun they are to party with. So yeah, here we go:

It's important to remember that this list does not speak to the character of those in the house, but only of their rep on campus. For further exploration of each house, click the links and review some of my old segments. There's still a lot of houses I haven't gotten to, which is because I either haven't had time yet or they're not interesting enough to write about.

And of course I'm anticipating the "blah blah blah what does Johnny Quest know, he's just a GDI ****" response, but the answer is more than you think. If you claim your house is ranked too low or are pissed it isn't on the list at all, one of the great things about this job is that I don't have to care. But let the bitching begin.

Top 5 should definitely be AXO, Phi, TriDelt, DG, and EK, in no particular order. Please stop ranking these houses. Sorority women especially. Potential New Members come into recruitment looking for a place they belong - not for the "best" house, but for whichever house is best for them. Each and every one of these sororities has something unique and amazing to offer these young women, and comments bashing and/or praising certain houses do not help these ladies decide which house they would be happiest in with a clear and open mind. They could be perfectly comfortable in "Alpha Alpha Alpha" but based on comments like these, choose "Beta Beta Beta" and end up unhappy and deactivating. This is not something the Greek community promotes, and is not what the Potential New Member wants out of their sorority experience. Some of it was actually funny, if you were pissed because of something he wrote about your house, then just ignore it and laugh about all the other things he wrote about your rival house. Notice how some of the things mentioned about those houses were true? Well chances are its the same for your (you're a little too close to the situation to see it).

In the end, Greek life has shaped a large number of great college careers and most people inside of it would not change it for the world.

Do yourself a favor and either have fun with this website or close out of it.

From what I've seen, Chi O girls are the ones not bitchy enough to be a Theta, Kappa, or Tri Delt (or blonde enough for the latter). JQ - Im excessively impressed with your list and criticisms. Being a 26 year old alum who's 22 year old girlfriend is in "the jan brady of sororities" should automatically drop my fraternity right off the list. I'd be happy to spend the majority of my boring ass day tomorrow at work, writing the appropriate description for chi phi, which, in the last 8 years has never really been above a 4 or 5 on the list, and has been as low as the very worst. It's been the Jew house, the house for jews who dont want to be in a jew house, the jock house, the house for jocks who don't want to be in a jock house (clearly we don't know where we fit in), the rich house, the stoner house... and usually is some blend of all of them. the only consistent characteristic, is the significantly large and local alumni base, that instead of donating money, still hangs out in search of 19 year old girls, drugs and most importantly -- enough natural light to fully douse the entire house's carpetting (and pledge class) with urine for a week.
