Minor indie-rock deity Damon Krukowski '85 is offering a course on how words are like, ya know, art in the spring term. In addition to playing in Damon & Naomi and running his own avant-garde publishing company, Krukowski will spend his time teaching a few lucky Advocate members how to sound even more pretentious. After all, it's dreadfully important to be able to name-drop George Brecht and Dick Higgins as you're cutting lines. Ceci n'est pas une pipe!

Half course (spring term). M., 2-5. Parallel formal experiments in 20th-century visual art and poetry have entwined their techniques in contemporary practice. This class will employ a cross-disciplinary approach to the use of words in art; students will write through a set of poetic exercises designed to explore language as an art material. Readings examine Duchamp through Cage to contemporary aleatory, conceptual, and process art; and avant-garde movements engaged with both visual art and poetry including Dada, Surrealism, the OULIPO, and Fluxus.
