That’s right – the Harvard Crimson staff just laid down the gauntlet to their bitter rivals, and now, it’s up to the Yale Daily News editorial team to pick it up and bludgeon them with it.
On November 22nd, the Yale Bulldogs will face off against the Harvard Crimson for the 125th time in one of the most anticipated games of the Ivy League season. However, before kickoff starts at noon, the editors of Harvard’s news rag hope to taken on the editors from Yale’s in a gridiron battle of their own.
In an open letter to the Yale Daily News, Crimson Staff Writer Madeleine I. Shapiro wrote:
And so here I am presenting you with what has been in the back of my mind since reading about it last fall: we challenge you to a pre-Game football matchup.
Now this may seem like it’s coming out of nowhere. Editors are often not the most athletic people, especially given sports board members frequently choose to write sports because they can’t play them.
I promise, the idea is not so far-fetched.
[…] In just a preliminary search of the archives, I can find Crimson-YDN games on Harvard-Yale mornings dating back as far as 1961, games that played a large role in a rivalry that seems at this point to have come down to a simple three hours in either Harvard Stadium or the Yale Bowl.
Oh, “it’s on” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Still, one must wonder why the tradition was stopped in the 1960s. Could it be because no one cared? Or, could it have been because budding journalists probably make the worst football players ever?
Undoubtedly, it's a little from column A and a whole lot from column B – or vice versa.
