Georgia fans are dedicated… dedicated and crafty.
Tomorrow UGA will play Arizona State University at the Sun Devil Stadium, the farthest the team has traveled in 48 years. Still, the distance isn’t stopping Georgia fans from attending the game.
In a season where the University of Georgia was ranked No. 1 in the preseason, tickets have been notoriously hard to get for alumni. Who gets the limited seats is based on donations to the school, which could mean shelling out thousands of dollars just to see the Dawgs play. Not that it’s not worth it.
Even for this far off game, fans were scrambling for a chance to go. Bloomberg reports on the difficulty of getting tickets:
Georgia received 7,300 single-game tickets from Arizona State for the game, and 13,000 requests to buy them, Evans said. The school gave first crack to donors who earned the most points for giving to its athletic fund. The threshold for a first-time contributor to get tickets was $10,500, he said.
Needless to say, not all alumni can throw away generously donate $10,500 to attend some football games, even if they are amazing games.
Then how did these clever fans get tickets? They simply bought less-coveted Sun Devils season tickets, some of which went for as little as $99. It’s sad to say, but Arizona State rarely sells out and is happy to give the tickets to the opposition, even scheduling games with opponents they know will buy more seats.
So Georgia fans, kudos for taking advantage of Arizona State’s pathetic showing. Their loss is your win (most likely off the field and on the field).
