I've just discovered a new hobby.
It's called "Name the Songs in the Song," and here's how you play: listen to any song mixed by Girl Talk (aka Pittsburgh's Gregg Gillis) and try to figure out just how many songs he mixes in to each track. Seriously. It's actually fairly challenging, and really, really enjoyable.
And not only is there a ridiculous amount of samples used, but the variety of musical genres and time frames is insane.
An example is the track "Here's the Thing" off his latest release "Feed the Animals." I can never say I've enjoyed Kelly Clarkson. But when she's mixed with Nine Inch Nails "Wish", Prodigy, Blur, a ton of 90's hip-hop and "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield, it works, and it works well.
And a video someone made and that's now available on YouTube is badass, too. They actually took the time to mix together all of the corresponding music videos from all the songs used.
The whole CD is mind blowing. I don't think I've said "Oh man! I love that song! In this song!" so many times...ever. And, another bonus...looking for something to play at your next party? Look no further. It's all danceable, it's all songs people know, it's all glorious. And if you want, you can download it for free.
OH, and he's touring right now. So if jamming out on your iPod isn't enough, you can catch him for around $15 at a city near you. Beautiful.
