Broken Social Scene, "Cause = Time," Barton Hall, 11/11/07
The Yo La Tengo/BSS extravaganza drew a veritable crowd of strange facial hairstyles, anorexics weighed down by large vintage sweaters, and Parkinson's disease-like dancing. Perhaps it was the flux of opener Yo La Tengo's set between prolific 12-minute long rock explosions and mellow elevator-music-like serenades, but the crowd didn't really know what to do with themselves, aside from twitching nervously between bouts of stiff arm-crossing.
As Broken Social Scene took the stage for the second half, the crowd, which barely filled half of Cornell's airplane hanger/gym, Barton Hall, let loose a bit, even giving way to some mild crowd-surfing(!). Kevin Drew, singer/guitarist for BSS, said in between songs, "You guys are the quietest crowd I've ever seen," and then later forgot the lyrics to an acoustic solo performance of "It's All Gonna Break." What fun!
Indie rock: Still alive 'n kickin' in Ithaca.
