Myaamia, Miami

Myaamia, Miami

Miami University has reported today that there will be a film exhibition to complement talks that will be held about the Miami tribe that this university was named after. There will be speakers discussing why the culture must be preserved, a discussion of what the project is about and a film series starting off with Maria Tallchief.

I encourage all of my fellow Miamians to do their best to attend one of these events or at least learn a bit more about the Myaamia Project. I understand that the guilt of what some of our ancestors (not my ancestors!) did to the natives of this land can only go so far after becoming so detached from those who committed the original crimes, but this culture is dying. Our school is named after these people, so I think the least we can do is maybe read up about the Miami tribe and maybe see if this culture can't yet be saved.

For those of you reading this thinking, "What do I care about those Indians?" I say, first off, Indians live in India and are only called that here because Christopher Columbus had a really bad map. Second, you deserve to be slapped around with one of their many broken treaties. Lastly, I hope you lose all of your money at a Native American casino so they can use it to buy back the land you have probably desecrated with your ignorance and obliviousness.

WTF redhawk? Did it ever occur to you that maybe not all of us have white ancestors? What is that supposed to mean "OUR" ancestors? Either way, why should any of us feel guilty even if our ancestors are white? We didn't do anything? I don't even know how you can desecrate land with ignorance or obliviousness. You are just dumb. "I understand that the guilt of what some of our ancestors..." Never said we're all white, hence the "...some of our ancestors..." If you don't feel guilty, that's fine, but when I've driven through the reservations where Native Americans have been forced, I do feel guilty for living on the land where their ancestors had been long before.

And c'mon! You can't lie to me and say you don't know how to desecrate a land with ignorance and obliviousness. You just did!

Thanks for playing.
