"So, are you gonna teach, or what?" I continue to dread telling people what my major is because this always the first response. Basically, everyone is asking me what in God's name I plan to do with a degree in letters and semi-colons. Someone went so far as to say, "What the hell are you majoring in English for? You already speak English. Why are you wasting all your money?"
Tell you the truth, I don't know what I'm going to do when I get out of college. Likely I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing now, which is plod my way through life hoping to pick up some scratch through food service jobs and medical experiments. Everyone seems to have the impression that the only thing one could possibly do with an English degree is to teach other people to get English degrees and continue the vicious cycle of useless knowledge. As a former Philosophy major, I actually think I traded up; I could actually write for a living instead of sitting around thinking about whether that hookah in my well-pillowed studio apartment exists or not.
Anyway, what does it matter? No one is going to get a job after college these days. Anyone who thinks I should've done something more marketable like Engineering or Computer Science will be sorely surprised when they get replaced by a computer in Bangladesh while I get to at least be unemployed and literate at the same time.
As I get closer to the end, the question of what I'm going to do with my chosen degree gets more important but less clear. I stopped even answering the aforementioned question; I'm just going to do what I do. Having a college degree in anything is something, and I'll just stick to my guns and see what happens.
Any other majors out there get this kind of regard?
