For those of you who aren't raging carnivores, you might not know that GW’s little corner of Washington, D.C. is home to some fantastic steak houses. So if you like the idea of treating yourself to something special every once in a while, here is a list of some of the best places to blow a couple hundred bucks and get your steak on.
1. Fogo de Chão (202) 347-4668
Located on 11th and Pennsylvania Avenue, Fogo de Chão offers not only a delicious array of meats, but a great dining experience. For a moderately pricey $48 per person, you can sit back as tens of Brazilian waiters bring you anything from traditional filets to small bits of turkey wrapped in bacon in what they call “espeto corrido” or “continuous service.” Be aware that it is very possible to run up an enormous bill with sides and beverages, but take solace in the fact that a visit to this red meat heaven ensures you will never suffer from anemia or protein-deficiency again. Reservations made in advance are a good idea for a Friday night, but not always necessary.
2. Smith and Wollensky (202) 466-1100
Smith and Wollensky is a bit more stuffy, but is just a quick walk from the Foggy Bottom campus (1112 19th Street). Although this traditional New York style steak house has both a great bar and a great atmosphere, it is far less of an experience than Fogo de Chão. It's nothing that pumping in a little Brazilian music couldn't solve, and Smith and Wollensky does boast a nation-wide reputation with food and service sure to impress. Reservations can be made online or over the phone. Be sure to try the turtle soup, even if it doesn't come in a shell.
3. The Capital Grille (202) 737-6200
As if the extra “e” in the name didn’t make it obvious, this place is down right classy. Although this is reflected in the hefty price, The Capital Grille, located on the corner of 6th and Pennsylvania, is the place to be if you want to feel like a highroller (or if you just are one). This great place to celebrate a big event, with food and service that will not disappoint even the most spoiled Delta Gamma from New Jersey. The Capital Grille also offers a great cigar menu for all of you classy gentlemen/future emphysemics out there. (Hint: Make a reservation in the name of a famous ex-baseball player and you will be put in the illustrious wine room. This is most impressive if you're over 21 and can actually drink the wine.)
