Ebola, SARS, the Plague at Boston University

Ebola, SARS, the Plague at Boston University
The construction for a new Boston University building is in its final stages. This building is particularly interesting because it's a new lab that will house dangerous organisms such as: Ebola, SARS, and the plague.

The biomedical lab has a National Institutes of Health (NIH) rating of 4. Level 4 means that this lab is one of the safest biomed labs in the nation, but local residents feel like they are at risk for exposure to these lethal microbes.

The glass and steel structure, with a price tag of $198 million, is set to lead research in infectious germs and vaccines. The Boston University representatives swear that the lab is safe, and it will ultimately produce life saving studies that will put Boston University on the map.

The South End and Roxbury residents, areas near the lab site, are still convinced that airborne viruses may escape causing illness or death. So far the residents are succeeding, the construction was initially scheduled for completion in January of 2008, but the lawsuits from the local residents held back the progress.

Though the big, bad biolab will win on this one; the bean townies are putting up a good fight.
