Refusing to ask for directions – it is synonymous with being male. Asking for any sort of help is a sign of weakness and thus, a question of one’s masculinity. However, being so stubborn can be deadly for men, according to Columbia University professor, Dr. Legato.

In her new book, Why Men Die First, Dr. Legato explains the biological differences between the sexes and why men die sooner than women. Not surprisingly, hormones are to blame. Testosterone in men causes them to be more aggressive which is why so many men in their 20s and 30s die from accidents and violence. It also causes more deadly illnesses such as heart disease and cancers that estrogen protects women from. Other factors including smoking, heavy drinking, unprotected sex and lack of exercise cause men to die before they reach the age of 65.

Clearly, there are ways to live a longer, healthier life. Exercise, eat right, don’t smoke and use a condom every time you have sex. If you are going to drink, do it in moderation. Despite the warnings, many men still refuse to seek professional or medical help. Men will always be men but maybe they can learn to be a little less stubborn. Maybe?
