This November will be the first time I can vote in a presidential election. And with all the media coverage, there is an overwhelming amount of people telling me the differences between Barack Obama and John McCain. Both promise to make America a stronger, better country, and yet lately, the media focus has moved away from the actual candidates for president to the vice presidential candidates.
Well, one in particular: Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, and running mate of John McCain. Joe Biden fades into the background of vice presidential debates as people wait to see what dumb thing Palin will say next. My personal favorite was her claim that she had experience in foreign matters. Apparently, in Sarah Palin’s opinion, living in Alaska counts as actually having some kind of foreign affairs experience just because she can see Russia from her backyard. Interesting. Well, this changes everything.
The media loves to poke fun at this woman from Alaska, to such a point of “Saturday Night Live” moving to a special political hour on Thursdays to have more televised opportunity to laugh at this woman. “Saturday Night Live”, on Thursdays? All because of the American people’s love for Tina Fey poking fun at Sarah Palin’s accent and lack of knowledge. What a moneymaker she’s turning out to be. My personal favorite SNL skit on the VP candidate is the interview with Katie Couric (www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/couric-palin-open/704042/) because so much of it wasn't even a spoof, but actually real things that Palin said. Genius.
And although I haven’t totally decided on whom to vote for in November, I’m seriously considering the Republican ticket just so that “SNL” will have at least four more years of great jokes based on the governor. It certainly would be a funny four years!

Hi there! I'm a white, female, Christian, U of I alum living in London for the last 18 years and if your article was a joke, you are picking the wrong time to be frivolous and if you are serious wow! do you have a lot to learn before you get here next spring!!! A very low percentage of the world population thinks a McCain/Palin ticket would be good for the world. Obama is patriotic, he is a Christian and he is wiser and a better strategic thinker - which is what America desparately needs - than McCain on a bad day and Palin on a good day will ever be. Grow up honey, learn and live your life to the fullest instead of worring about you costume this Haloween. Shame on you for representing the U of I in such an ignorant manner!!!!!

I hope you know I am joking. I left a comment above about how I actually am taking this election seriously, so please don't be concerned about that. Also, I am considering the pros and cons of each candidate at this time. I am using this opportunity to joke a little, because the seriousness of the situation sometimes requires a little reprieve. And, I worry about way more than my Halloween costume, for your information. I understand that many people, myself included, have stresses that threaten to bog them down every single day. I am trying to use this blog in a way so that people can smile a little instead of going through life with all those stresses overwhelming them. Thank you for your comment, and please know that I will take your suggestion to heart. Posted 10/25/2008 1:01 PMReply
Be grateful for your right to vote and do indeed consider both candidates and the pros and cons seriously. I hope you make the right decision for you. Please note that in these times and circumstances many, many people have stresses in their lives that put those of a student in the shadows. If you do make it to London, please contact me through the London U of I alumni association. I would be pleased to invite you for dinner and to discuss life in London and Europe as well as America.
With best regards,

I stumbled on your blog by accident, saw your name and had to post. I studied in France a lifetime ago with a young lady who shares/shared your name, same spelling and all. You wouldn't be related would you? She was from Ohio (Oberlin). If so, please tell her that Tanya from L.A. says hi.
As to the election--I'm glad to see our youth take such an interest in this election. Do your homework and make the choice you feel is right. Posted 11/03/2008 5:00 PMReply
How are you post election? I travelled to Illinois from London to cast my vote personally, I felt it so important. I was actually in Champaign on campus at Legends when the results were announced and saw many students spontaneously gathering at Wright and Green in positive joy to chant Yes We Can and waving - not burning as in my day- American flags. It was a wonderful atmosphere and I hope you joined in the patriotism. Back in London now and I can't begin to tell you how excited the world outside of America is with the results of this election. Hope all goes well for you as the remainder of the year unfolds.
