Franken v. Coleman... Can't They Both Lose?

Election night was on November 4th, yet the fight for a Minnesota Senate seat rages on between Democrat Al Franken and incumbent Republican Norm Coleman. The end, however, seems near and it's looking like former comedian turned politician over night, Al Franken, will win the seat. The real question, though, is... can't they both lose?

This past election grabbed hold of the interest of a previously apathetic group of Americans; the college-aged men and women that would sooner spend a night in watching porn or Grey's Anatomy than they would reading political news. One of the reasons this demographic used to be untapped is because of the royal B.S. that would take place in the political realm. Franken and Coleman seem determined to bring back the steaming-pile-o'-crap form of politics that previously turned off a large portions of Americans.

Republicans will say that they are trying to ensure that a Democratic Secretary of State doesn't decide the votes for the great state of Minnesota. Democrats will say that they are trying to end the poor service the Republican incumbent has brought to the great state of Minnesota and bring Obama-esque change (If the argument against Obama is he had no experience, then Franken is hardly potty-trained and still teat-suckling in the world of politics). You know who actually seemed pretty legitimate in this election, though? Independent candidate, Dean Barkley.

Granted with only 15% of the vote, Barkley wouldn't really have a good case to lawyer up and make Democracy his bitch, but he never really seemed like the kind of guy that would do that. In this day and age, it seems to be a necessity to have either a Democrat or Republican in office - Dear God, can we get a viable third party, please!? - but do Minnesotans really want either Franken or Coleman in the Senate at this point? Or would they rather that they somehow both lose and have a representative in the Senate that didn't lawyer up the system to get there?
