As a Northwestern student, the Alamo Bowl was heartbreaking. We haven’t won a bowl game since 1949 and last night we came this close against Missouri. The odds were against us but somehow we pulled it together, played well and didn’t choke like we usually do. We even made it into overtime.
Upon reflection, it’s easy to wonder, what if our kicker hadn’t continued to kick terribly and miss that extra point? Would we have won the game 24-23 instead of losing 23-30?
However, I have other questions on my mind and they mostly revolve around the coverage of the game. Specifically, why did ESPN insist on showing Mizzou’s quarterback Chase Daniel’s family all the damn time?
No one else’s family was shown. In fact, I’m pretty sure I saw more of Daniel’s sister’s face than of Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald’s. Oh, and I think Daniel’s girlfriend was in there somewhere too and I heard she’s hot, but still.
I get it… Chase Daniel is a great quarterback and no one in the real world actually cares about Northwestern. But come on: A. Daniel didn’t even play that well last night and B. I didn’t need his mom’s facial expressions to tell me that.
And yes, I'm just bitter.
