President-elect Obama has been taking heat as of late from an odd source: LIBERALS! That's right, previously the savior of the nation is now being lamented by a portion of those that elected him, and he hasn't even taken office yet. His crime: asking Rick Warren to give the Invocation at his inauguration.
The LGBT community has called this action a setback for their community and they have condemned Obama for allowing a proponent of the controversial Proposition 8 to speak at his event. Apparently being President of the United States of America means representing only those that elected him.
Personally, I don't understand the backlash. Not that I agree with Warren's stance on banning gay marriage. The ban, to me, is an arbitrary tool of enforcing one's religion on another, something that isn't exactly legal in this country. However, I support President-elect Obama's decision to allow Warren to speak, since he is in fact going to be the President of both flaming liberals and bigot conservatives, which is exactly why Obama is allowing him to speak in the first place. Warren is probably about as likely to speak about the sin of working on the Sabbath as he is about the sin of homosexuality. If anything he might mention how he respects Obama for taking heat from his own base in order to try to unite the country, despite their differences.
Yes, there is the argument that by giving someone against gay marriage this platform, it might show that banning gay marriage is right, but I sincerely doubt anyone is going to change their mind one way or the other based on Warren's appearance. Plus, if Warren standing with Obama means banning gay marriage is okay, then does Democrats standing on stage with Republicans mean they agree with everything Republicans believe in or vice-verse?
Bottom line, if Warren gets up on stage and preaches against gay marriage and turns the country into the United States of Gay Bashing, then you can say I was wrong and call me an idiot (some of you might anyway).
