UF is Considering Throwing Away $200,000 on a Bike Rental Program

UF is considering implementing a bicycle rental program, similar to the Zipcar car-sharing program that we have that no one uses. This plan is offered through the The Collegiate Bicycle Company and would cost $200,000 to put into place. The aim is to decrease car congestion on campus.

You would be allowed to rent a bicycle using your Gator 1 and use it for short periods of time throughout the day. The new bikes would also have a chip in them to track who has the bicycle. According to the director of the UF Office of Sustainability claims that the program will pay for itself after a 4 year period.

UF's Transportation Working Group will meet Nov. 20 to discuss the possibility of adopting this plan. But allow me to save you guys the meeting time.

First of all, bikes aren't that expensive. Most people who want bikes have them. And unless this service is going to cost a one time fee of $5, I'm sure most people rather invest in their own bike and be able to take it anywhere.

Secondly, the problem of cars on campus has nothing to do with students getting from class to class, but everything to do with getting from their off-campus apartments to school. Most people who live walking distance to the school, do not park their car on campus. The people who do are the ones that live on Archer, 20th etc who don't want to wait for the bus. So that renders the system pretty much obsolete.

Unless you want to set up the bike rental places all over town instead of just on campus, I estimate the amount of students to use the system yearly will be about 18. And if that's the case, they're going to charge those poor souls a pretty penny in order to recoup that $200,000 in four years.
