10 Reasons to Stay Away from the Big House

10 Reasons to Stay Away from the Big House

Ten reasons from a Michigan State Spartan fan and alumni of why I won’t be within 50 miles of Ann Arbor for Saturday’s annual gridiron clash between MSU and Michigan:

10) I prefer the streets of East Lansing.

9) Michigan Stadium is a terrible place to watch a football game as a visitor – you’re so far away, you may as well sit at home and watch on your big screen with a six pack close at hand and just a few paces from the john.

8) For that matter, why watch at home: enjoy the wonderful smell and taste of a Border Burger with Swiss on Rye at the Peanut Barrel.

7) The need to be around more Green and White and to avoid the Blue and Yellow – especially if the Spartans lose.

6) When attending Michigan tailgates, make sure you pack your caviar and champagne, your pinky finger is up, your nose is firmly directed to the skies. As opposed to MSU tailgates, where the prerequisites are Pabst Blue Ribbon and close proximity to the head.

5) Ann Arbor Arrogance is enough to stay away from the University of Michigan any day during the fall, but it gets so high it spills over the kettle during the annual MSU-UM tilt

4) The windy, angled streets of Ann Arbor make for a disastrous traffic situation in and out of that city during football game days.

3) More time to spend at home with family and kids.

2) I hate Michigan fans.

1) I want to celebrate in East Lansing with the Spartan community when we finally beat the Wolverines into submission. Watching Grand River Avenue fill with thousands of fans gleaming with Spartan pride will be a wonderful sight to behold.

If you think our tailgates are classy, you should take a walk down state street on game day. Pabst Blue Ribbon is way too classy for that. It's all about the Natty baby! Posted 10/23/2008 1:35 PMReply

There are really only one or two reasons that make sense. If you're going to avoid Ann Arbor, it should be about the school, the team, or the fans, not the fact that a hamburger at some shitty restaurant is delicious. Perhaps if you went to a school where mowing the lawn wasn't a homework assignment you'd have the intelligence to put together a coherent top ten list. Posted 10/23/2008 2:17 PMReply

You are not an alumni of MSU. You are either an alumnus or an alumna. Alumni is plural. But then again, you did go to State. Posted 10/23/2008 4:04 PMReply

The fact that potentially beating M would be a reason for MSU fans to celebrate in the streets proves that they are indeed Little Brother Posted 10/23/2008 4:34 PMReply

To be fair, I do often have Caviar at my tailgates... I mean it is kinda the staple of UM football. Caviar and fine wines. You know I am starting to think that State fans have an inferiority complex, they think we are arrogant but maybe they just don't feel good enough to be around Michigan. It's not an in-state rivalry. It's an out of state rivalry. It's New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania rich kids who come to MI and then thumb their noses at the people who were actually born and raised in Michigan. Just like Oregon (Californians)-Oregon State (people from Oregon). P.S. the wolverine have never been seen in the state of Michigan. Posted 10/26/2008 03:44 AMReply

Dear "U of M" fans. Go back to the East Coast if you hate Midwesterners so much. Just don't call yourself "Michigan" any more, got it? Posted 10/26/2008 03:48 AMReply

...have you ever had a conversation with a Spartan that lasted more than 5 minutes?

...and if it did, did you want to blow your brains out like I did?
