College Literraire Universitaire Alum Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio Wins Nobel Prize for Literature, Has Long Name

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio not only has a really long name, he has a really long list of books he’s authored. The French writer has been chosen as the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and true to tortured artist form, he’s said,”I always thought of myself as a bit of an outsider.”

According to CNN International:

The committee said Le Clezio was an "author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization."

Le Clezio has written some 30 books including novels, essays, and short stories. Critics have found him hard to define, with his writing and subject matter having changed considerably over time, according to an article in Label France, a magazine published by the French government.

His work reflects ecological concerns, rebellion against the intolerance of Western nationalist thought, and his fascination with Native Americans, according to the magazine.

Okay, so maybe he’s a bit Orientalist in his treatment of Native Americans, but still the man can write. And like many writers who feel like outsiders, he’s found a true home in language, telling CNN, “I love the French language, which is perhaps my true country!”
