Politics or Party? Perhaps Both

Politics or Party? Perhaps Both

Students here at Miami University clung to the recent election like AIG to their bailout money. Now that the election has been over for almost a week, will students maintain an interest in politics? That has been the question on the minds of many leaders within both College Republicans and College Democrats.

To be fair, it is conceivable that Obama really was just a great speaker that was able to get college students involved long enough to help get him elected. College students do, after all, have the attention span of a rock. Students turning in their ballot on election day could have almost been seen as a trade - one ballot for one shot of strong whiskey, because that's certainly what many students did election night to either forget about all of the Fox News they watched only to see their candidate lose in a landslide, or to celebrate the win of an unlikely candidate. (What better way to celebrate the election of a clear thinking individual by fogging up your own mind with all sorts of mood altering agents).

Seeing as the future of the country does, to some extent, lie in the hands of today's youth, it is this writer's hope that the youth (whether Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, or - perhaps - a little bit crazy) will remain interested in the affairs of our great nation. But for now, the question remains. Will young republicans watch as Obama doesn't change a damn thing about partisan politics or will young democrats watch as Obama lives up to the expectations of the world and usher in a messiah-esque era of peace and tranquility? Only time will tell.
