While a large portion of America may be skeptical of Palin’s ability to be vice president, Saturday Night Live is embracing the VP stunt pick with open arms.
I’d love the winking wonder mom too if she translated to big money for me. The latest spoof, based on the VP debates, drew in approximately 10 million viewers for SNL, which is 42 percent higher than the same show last year.
The Wall Street Journal examines this vital trend of Palin parodyship:
Interest was fueled by last Thursday night's vice-presidential debate, which drew 69.9 million viewers to become the most-watched VP matchup ever.
The debate, in which Gov. Palin faced off against Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden for the first and only time during the campaign, provided considerable fodder for Ms. Fey and her fellow writers.
If the Wall Street Journal can take subtle digs at Palin, you know we’re free to show no mercy.
And SNL has shown no mercy. UVa alum Tina Fey’s impersonation of Palin is pure comic gold. Sure the cast tries to take their jabs at Obama and Biden too, but there’s just not as much material to work with. I certainly doubt the whopping 49 percent increase the show has seen this year over the same period last year has anything to do with that random SNLer’s Biden impression.
So, even though most Americans should be a little concerned if the woman who can’t name a Supreme Court case packs her moose heads up and lands in the White House, SNL will at least be thankful. Last year, nobody watched the increasingly irrelevant sketch comedy show.
This year, Fey could swap with Palin and nobody would even notice. At least, everybody would pretend not to notice.
