Cavalier fans are up in arms over a new policy that bans all signs from University of Virginia sporting events.
While signs that contain “derogatory comments, profanity, impede another guest’s view of the field or cover any stadium signage” have always been banned, the new policy covers signs of any kind.
Some people believe past controversial signs may have led to the change. From the DailyProgress.com:
The new policy comes roughly a year after UVa student David Becker was threatened with ejection from Scott Stadium during a UVa football game against Duke University. Becker drew the ire of stadium officials for holding up a sign in the front row that read “Fire Groh.”
Becker’s homemade sign reflected a view of head football coach Al Groh that was shared by a number of Cavaliers fans at the time.
UVa football fans took to the message boards to rant about the new policy at TheSabre.com. The comments ranged from anger to humor to some just plain good suggestions:
“Entertaining creativity stifled again. Ridiculous.” Sabreville
“So much for the 1st amendment” AthensHoo
“Everyone should bring a sign that says ‘NO SIGNS ALLOWED.’”
“Great… I’ll carry a sign to create a diversion so I can get my flask in.” 79 Wahoo
The only thing worse than angry sports fans denied their signs is angry sports fan denied their signs but with lots and lots of alcohol.
