NYU's Women's Soccer Team Wins Stevens Engineering Cup

The semester has only just begun, and the ladies of NYU’s women’s soccer team have already claimed their first title of the season: the Stevens Engineering Cup.

Over the weekend, the NYU Violets squared off against the ladies of Middlebury in the finals of the Stevens Engineering tournament. While the two teams remained deadlocked for a majority of the game, NYU eked out a victory by scoring the game’s only goal with less than ten minutes remaining on the clock.

According to a Stevens Ducks press release:

With just under nine minutes left in regulation, [Sarah] Pillemer was able to net her second goal of the season off a rebound after sophomore forward Laura Palumbo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tried to put it past senior goalkeeper Adele Plunkett (Austin, Texas). Palumbo received a nice cross from sophomore midfielder Filiz Kipcakli (Port Washington, N.Y.) from seven yards out and fired it as Plunkett could not grasp the ball. Pillemer was there for the easy tap in, which secured the win and broke the four-year win streak that Stevens has held in claiming the Cup.

Is it surprising that the team that shares its name with the cup dominated the tournament for the past four year? No, but it certainly makes the Violents’ victory that much sweeter.

Congratulations to the ladies of NYU for a well-deserved victory. Hopefully, this is just a hint of things to come!
