On-Campus Experience: Relationship Abuse

On-Campus Experience: Relationship Abuse

Students expect many things from the college experience, a strict academic schedule, randomized Facebook attacks, brushes with binge drinking, and now, students are expected to be wary of relationship violence.

A recent study conducted by Christine M. Forke covered untouched ground regarding relationships of undergraduates between the ages of 17-22.  The investigation involved 910 undergraduates surveying their experiences in superficial friendly connections to romantic partnerships. The students divulged details about the degree of abuse experienced in these relationships.

Almost half of the students experienced relationship violence before and during college. In experiences before college, students reportedly had more experience with emotional abuse. On college campuses, the students experienced sexual and emotional violence at the same levels.

Not surprisingly, males made up more than half of perpetrators of sexual violence. Females beat men out as the physical violence perpetrators, but still had high numbers as victims of violent acts in general.

The research concludes that the college-bound and current campus dwellers experience different types of violence at concentrated levels. Current events are concrete indicators of this violence -- a Binghamton student left in a coma due to a violent outburst, and on-campus brutality, including the most fatal, seems to be popping up more often than not.

The results of this research calls for college campuses to examine security and support systems for students who are victims and perpetrators of violence.
