Thirsty Thursday is in danger. Fortunately, not at Michigan. However, as an attempt to cut down on binge drinking, fellow big-ten University of Iowa has added more classes to its Friday schedule. This is just one new approach to a nation-wide attempt by universities to reduce the abuse of alcohol on campus. Michigan has announced that they have no intention of adding Friday classes and will continue with their “stay in the blue” campaign.
Adding more Friday classes will not solve the drinking problem, if anything it might increase it. A lot of people drink to reduce stress from a week of school. If they have to wait until Friday night in order to get that release it will add another day of stress to drink to. Hence, a greater binge than they would have the night before. And if there are events going on, people are going to drink on Thursday nights regardless of whether or not they have class the next day. Iowa should stick to their corn reaping and leave the creative thinking to schools with plans that might do more help than harm.
