NU's Neighboring Elementary Opens "Learning Garden"
While Northeastern continues to throw up new buildings (hello new 12-story dorm), some Back Bay institutions prefer to progress in a more liberal fashion.

Cue this new playground attached to Northeastern's neighbors Carter Elementary (they're not even a Montessori school). A sensory garden outdoor classroom? What kind of new age feel-goodery is this? Does this touchy-feely school abandon grades too? Don't the organizers of this school realize this isn't Burlington, Vermont and there are drug dealers a few blocks away?

It's bad enough this elementary school is so close to crime Roxbury, but what's up with the 21st century hands-on education approach?

Wow, open mouth, jam in foot: Carter is actually a school for severely - severely - handicapped kids. I don't think grades are part of the picture. Hanging out in a peaceful outdoor park may be the highlight of their monumentally difficult lives. Posted 10/31/2007 09:50 AMReply
