Everyone knows college sports is full of rivalries.
But what are these teams actually fighting over?
You'd be surprised.
Here is OTR's list of the Top 10 Oddest Rivalry Trophies:
10. Florida vs. Miami: War Canoe
Celebrating the traditions of the Seminole Indians, the War Canoe is hand carved and painted from a 200-year-old tree felled by lightning. Today, though, it resides at UM’s Sports Hall of Fame on campus.
9. Mississippi vs. Mississippi State: The Golden Egg Trophy
In the 1920s, the rivalry between the two Mississippi schools became so fierce that rioting would break out and the goalposts attacked. To lessen the violence, the Golden Egg trophy was created. The prize was actually a depiction of a football, but back then the footballs looked more like eggs than today.
8. Oregon vs. Oregon State: The Platypus Trophy
In the rivalry known as the Civil War, a wooden platypus was given to the winner But in the 60s, the creature went missing but was found recently. It remains to be seen whether the statue will once again grace the trophy shelf of the winner.
7. Indiana vs. Michigan State: The Old Brass Spittoon
The Old Brass Spittoon tradition started in 1950 but legend has it the spittoon has been around since both universities were first started.
6. Cincinnati vs. Louisville: The Keg of Nails
Not quite what it sounds like to college guys today, the Keg of Nails trophy is actually a replica of a keg used to ship nails, not to hold beer. The origin, though, is somewhat unclear.
5. Michigan State vs. Penn State: The Land Grant Trophy
In an odd case of history meeting sports, this trophy’s name honors the Morrill Land Grant Act. The bill used the sale of public land to develop schools of agriculture, and both Michigan State and Penn State are land-grant universities.
4. Bowling Green vs. Toledo: The Peace Pipe
The peace pipe came into existence in 1947 after 12 years of the two teams not playing each other thanks to fan rioting. The smoking of the pipe was a gesture of goodwill and then used as a trophy for the game.
3. Iowa State vs. Missouri: Telephone Trophy
During the rival’s game in 1959 it was discovered that the coaches’ field phones were malfunctioning and each team could hear the other. The problem was fixed by the start of the game, but the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. created the trophy after the controversy and it is still used today.
2. Minnesota vs. Wisonsin: Slab of Bacon and now Paul Bunyan’s Axe
Before there was Paul Bunyan’s Axe there was the Slab of Bacon, created by Dr. R.B. Fouch who made it to symbolize the winning team “bringing home the bacon.” When the wooden piece of meat went missing, the equally strange Paul Bunyan’s Axe was instituted.
1. Fresno State vs. Boise State: The Milk Can
The Milk Can, a chromed, 10-gallon, old-school milk can is a fairly new trophy, started in 2005. The Dairymen in Fresno and Boise thought up the trophy to make the rivalry official and, of course, shamelessly promote the benefits of milk.

I digress.
