A key component to building a successful college football program is recruiting from your area. Every big time football program is able to make sure the kids in their own backyard sign with the program. For instance, in order for my hometown Mizzou Tigers to continue beating Kansas and Illinois, they need to recruit Missouri talent (Why, yes, that was a subtle jab at Kansas and Illinois fans).
Penn State, however, keeps stealing away all of the Maryland talent. Six Maryland prospects have offered commitments to Penn State this year. Even Jelani Jenkins and Tavon Austin, the top ranked players in the state, are considering playing for the Nittany Lions.
Apparently, a 345-year-old man does a better job connecting with today's youth than a happy go lucky obese man does. Go figure.
