Last night, I took my own advice and checked out "In A Dark Dark House," a play by Neil Labute put up as a 1st Year MFA Directing Project.
And let me be the first to say in a public forum: What. The. Eff.
I went in not knowing what to expect and not expecting too much of anything, as it was a budget-less presentation of a play I'd never heard of starring a friend and two kids I'd never met. I dragged my less than enthused roommate who hates stage plays, and despite his aversion to most things campus-production, we were both floored.
If you haven't even thought about seeing this play, definitely put it into consideration. It's only an hour and a half and it's free. The story was smart and at times both strangely funny and wildly uncomfortable. The plot, which I knew had something to do with sexual abuse, is enough to make you cringe and literally gasp as you're watching, unable to believe what you are seeing.
The acting was phenomenal. Only three actors, and easily the best performed play I've seen on this campus. And for a set consisting of only three elements, I found myself grossly enthralled with what was going on. And I mean grossly involved. I'd tell you more, but then I'd ruin the twist. And you would hate me almost as much as you'll need to take a shower after the play is over.
Again - it's going up in the Struble Theater (in the Theater and Interpretation Center, right by Norris) for free tonight at 8 and 11 pm and tomorrow at 8 pm. You won't regret it.
