Ernie Kent's first reaction was selfish.
When the Oregon basketball coach answered his phone Sunday morning and heard Dave Frohnmayer break the news that he would be stepping down as university president after the 2008-09 school year, Kent couldn't help but think about how that would affect his program.
"But then I stopped myself and told him, 'After everything you've done for us and the University of Oregon, you deserve to retire,' " Kent said. "He's always somebody that's been in your corner and understands what athletics mean to the university. He understands that balance."
Since Frohnmayer took over as UO president in 1994, the athletic department has changed dramatically and millions of dollars have been spent building or expanding facilities. So when Frohnmayer publicly announced his retirement Tuesday, it resonated in the Casanova Center, where the occupants of the athletic offices appreciate the relationship they have had with the university president.
