Frusterated with the Wi-Fi situation around town? You’re not the only one. What once was supposed to be a bright shining beacon of a future with internet for all, Madison’s Wi-Fi situation has gone from bad to worse in recent times.

Wireless network creator Mad City Broadband and service providers ResTech and Merrimac Communications are probably the best places to point fingers at. The Badger Herald is reporting that out of the 2,000 people who signed up for the Wi-Fi service, 1,300 dropped out within nine months.

The problem? Well maybe this little nugget of knowledge attributed to Merrimac General Manager Kirk Olsen, “The signal for the network does not penetrate well into buildings made of concrete or brick…Polarized windows and metal can also make it more difficult to get a signal inside.” Seriously? You created a wireless network that doesn’t work inside buildings made of brick, concrete or metal? Did they think that Madison residents live in mud huts or straw houses like the three little pigs?

There are no comprehensive plans to fix the system as of yet, so you’re probably better off just stealing internet from your neighbors like you usually do.
