The results are in for the annual state rankings of U.S. obesity and the winner is (drumroll please) Mississippi! Or is it Colorado? No matter how you view it, Mississippi earns the title as the fattest state for three consecutive years and Colorado was named the leanest. Obviously, we can deduce what the state of Mississippi is doing wrong, but we have to wonder, what is Colorado doing right?
5 Reasons Why Colorado Is Not Fat
1. Active Lifestyle: The people of Colorado are very active and athletic by nature. In fact, they're surrounded by so much nature that there's nothing else to do. From the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, the land does not leave much space for mega malls and restaurant strips where people can waste their money. Instead, they can enjoy rock climbing, hiking, cycling, white water rafting, skiing, and snowboarding--just to name a few.
2. Mary Jane: Coloradans get their money's worth from marijuana, which can supposedly increase metabolism. Statistics show that only 455 kgs of weed have been seized by federal authorities while fatty Mississippi seized 1,143.3 kgs. You and I both know that there were more than 455 kgs of marijuana in the state of Colorado in one year, so where did it all go? One place for sure: CU Boulder. Last April, the campus drew a crowd of 10,000 for the annual 4/20 smoke-out where police handed out zero citations.
3. Wildlife: You can argue that smoking weed will also lead users to more calorie consumption, but that shouldn't apply to Colorado, which has a large wildlife population. The people there are more concerned with bears, elks, and even wolverines stealing their food.
4. Fasting: Colorado is home to a number of activist groups, such as Compassion International, which encouraged fasting for the victims of the global food crisis. By denying themselves of food for a cause, Coloradans have redefined the saying, "Beauty is sacrifice."
5. Democratic National Convention: In August, the DNC will take place in Denver, and I have a feeling that the state felt the pressure of living up to its skinny expectations. Otherwise, what would everyone think of it? It's okay, Colorado. Everyone can be a little insecure at times.
