Penn State Research Finds Alcohol Makes Fruit Flies Horny, Gay
                                                           A typical "fruit" fly

Penn State researchers have found that alcohol causes increased sexual arousal and decreased sexual inhibition in males. Shocking, we know.  But what they have also found is that, at least in fruit flies, daily alcohol use caused male fruit flies to try to "court" other male fruit flies. Ah, so there is an excuse for those Facebook photos of you hooking up with your "buddy."

In the research, fruit flies were given daily doses of ethanol to "more closely mimic the drinking habits of alcoholics and chronic alcohol abusers" (or college students). Researchers found that "male fruit flies, which typically court females, also actively court males when they are given a daily dose of ethanol."

Kyung-An Han associate professor of biology and a neuroscientist at Penn State said, "This part of our study demonstrates that sexual behavior is not determined only during an organism's development, but it also can be influenced by a post-developmental environmental factor; in this case, recurring exposure to ethanol."

So, if you think you're straight, and constantly end up drunk at Chumley's, now you know why ... you're a fruit fly.
