The Columbus police would rather arrest you than protect you; that is becoming clear. It became quite evident this weekend during the Michigan game.
In the days before the game, police were beefing up their defense against crime. How so? They strategically placed mobile lights up and down Indianola. Columbus police also frequently patrolled these streets from High to Summit with cruisers and bikers. There were also several paddywagons stationed around High Street. Interesting approach there, considering the close vicinity to fraternities, sororities and student-rented houses and apartments.
But the bigger point here is where this beefed up security wasn't: everywhere else. Not a single mobile street light where it was truly needed. There wasn't a street light seen west of High Street, north of Lane or south of 11th. Pretty odd considering that most of the recent crimes are happening in those areas, not on Indianola.
Another example could be found at Eddie George's Grille 27 during the game. Why would there need to be 15 cops sitting outside? Probably to arrest anyone that is intoxicated. Never mind any robberies or shootings going on; lets nab these sons of bitches who get drunk at a bar.
It is a given that people in the campus area were going to party and enjoy some adult beverages, but to enhance "security" this past weekend just to arrest students and fans while ignoring other areas, where crime is prevalent, is discriminatory. The least the cops could have done is disguised this blatant act of discrimination with at least a few street lights on 9th or King. Why be less than deliberate though, when you are the law.
To the police: enjoy your unchecked power over Ohio State students for now; in a few years they will be out of Columbus doing great things all over the world and you will still be here cracking down on "crime".
