I’m sure that all of you remember getting an invitation to a group called “Talib Kweli Wants to Come to BU for Free.”

At first I was a bit skeptical, but as I looked into the matter, it seemed like it was a legitimate competition.

The premise of the competition was that the five schools with the most votes for Talib were to get a free concert featuring none other than Talib Kweli in promotion of his album Eardrum.

I got it. I spread the invitations myself, because like many others at Boston University, I wanted to see Talib play a free show.

I even went so far as to send the link to my parents so that they could each vote and get BU closer to getting a free show.

The deadline was originally October 3rd, but it was then pushed back to October 17th. “Okay, as long as we get Talib,” I thought. So the date was pushed back and BU was not looking that hopeful, but I figured as big as BU is there’s no reason why we should not be able to win this thing.

As the deadline got closer, we starting moving up in the rankings until we made it all the way to the number one spot. The days were closing in and when it finally came October 17th, we finished somewhere around third place.

I was a bit disappointed that we were not the top school, but still it was the top five schools that got a free show, so as far as getting Talib to BU, we were golden.

At first there was no news of when the concert was to take place, but I figured that they would need some time to book the show. Time went on and there was no news of Talib. People started dropping from the Facebook group like flies.

Then came SpringFest—a perfect venue for the free Talib show, but no. Instead we got two members of Three 6 Mafia and Starship Cobra (of Snakes on a Plane fame), and no Talib. It’s almost a year later and still, no news of Talib.

What the f*ck happened?
