Kenyan College Grad Paul Newman Dies, Leaves Legacy of Movies, Philanthropy and Salad Dressings

On this, the eve of Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year), it seems fitting to pay tribute to Paul Newman. While only Jewish on his father’s side, the famous actor considered himself Jewish because “it’s more challenging.”

The legend, who died of cancer Friday at the age of 83, did a little of everything during his life, be it education, acting or philanthropy. Newman attended Ohio University before joining the army, and then graduated from Kenyan College. He later studied at the Yale drama school.

Newman made his Broadway debut in the original production of Picnic, but was best known for his movie roles. The good-looking actor started as a sex symbol, but later took on deeper roles, often portraying amoral loners. His movie credits include The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, Nobody’s Fool and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Today’s college students though may actually remember Newman more for his place in the grocery store rather than on the big screen. The actor was co-founder of Newman’s Own, a food company that makes everything from salad dressings to tomato sauces. All of the profits are donated to charity, and these contributions total more than $220 million.

So whether you think charming movie star or killer Italian dressing, when it comes to Paul there is no doubt he will be remembered and missed.
