Calendar Schmalendar. We Celebrate St. Patty's Day When We Want.
We're a big fan of St. Patrick's Day, just look at our profile picture for God's sake. And last year, when the holiday fell during spring break, it made sense to move the holiday. Because really, who can give up a day of drinking to celebrate the guy who drove the snakes out of Ireland. This year St. Patrick Day falls on the day we return from spring break (regardless of what the Irish Catholic Church says, our calendar says March 17), but that's not stopping people from trying to move the date again. The problem this time is, no one can agree on which date.

Last year, Penn State students showed the real power of Facebook by creating a 4,600+ member group which effectively changed St. Patrick's Day to March 2 and renaming it State Patty's Day. Although Penn State and the Borough didn't seem to like the idea it was a boon for the local bars in town (especially The Phyrst) with students lined up around 10 a.m. to start drinking.

But this year it looks like St. Patrick's Day falls on the Monday we return from spring break. But, because of leap year, the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has moved St. Patrick's Day (which is a holy day of obligation in Ireland) to March 15 so as not to interfere with Palm Sunday (which falls March 16). But that's Ireland, and this is the United States of America. Our calendar says March 17 is St. Patrick's Day, just like it does every year. But now, two Facebook groups are trying to move the date to either March 1 (a Saturday), or March 6 (a Thursday).

The group, "STATE PATRICK'S DAY 2008 - Thursday, March 6th" obviously wants to move the holiday to March 6. With over 4,600 members they've got a legitimate shot of being the winner in this debate. Plus they already have a t-shirt logo and everything. But their choice for dates is a Thursday, presumably because spring break will start for many people that following day. Good luck making that plane to Cancun hungover with green beer matted in your hair.

The group "STATE PATTY'S DAY, Pt. 2: MARCH 1st, 2008" wants to maintain March 2 as the official State Patty's Day, but unfortunately March 2 is a Sunday this year (you can't drink that day?). So they're proposing to move the holiday that they moved from March 17 to March 2, to March 1. Confused?Us too. This date seems to work better because it's a Saturday, and it's still a full week before classes end for break. But they're the newcomer to this year's debate (even though they say they were behind the initial date change last year) and the goup has just over 200 members right now.

Here's the solution: just call the entire month of March "Saint/State Patty's Month" and get drunk every night. Not sure how that will be any different from any other month though.

The fact that you effectively moved St. Pat's Day last year is truly impressive, but it doesn't look like it's meant to be this year. What if you celebrate it both days proposed? That way everyone gets at least one St. Pat's, and some will even get 2! Way to demonstrate the superior partying powers of the Big Ten. Posted 01/16/2008 12:33 PMReply
