Diversity Goes A Long Way

We live in a society that is constantly changing and diversifying. Specifically, minority groups (African Americans, Latinos and Asians) are slowly outnumbering the white population. However, we are still not completely accepting of people that are different. What can we do to promote diversity and make minorities feel more welcome? At Northeastern University and University of Vermont, students can get involved with student organizations created to do just that.

At Northeastern University, you can major in American Sign Language-English Interpreting. You will learn how to communicate with people who are deaf and act as a bridge between them and people who do not know sign language. After all, those that are deaf are people too and they deserve to say what’s on their mind no matter what.

Northeastern also has an extensive list of ethnic and cultural organizations that anyone can join to learn more about a specific culture or meet people that share common beliefs and customs. There is no better way to feel connected to others on campus!

At UVM, the list is just as extensive. There is even a list of seven ways to celebrate cultural diversity on campus. If they don’t work for you, check out their student government’s list of recognized clubs on campus. Notice at the top of the list is 9/11 Truth Movement “for students who aren’t satisfied with the official story.” What is that supposed to mean? Unfortunately, the links are disabled but I am guessing this organization serves as an outlet for those who were hurt in some way by the events of that historic day. Of course, if 9/11 Truth Movement is not what you are looking for, I am sure you will come across something in the rest of the list that is right for you.

College is a time to learn. However, we cannot rely on our textbooks and classroom lectures to teach us everything we need to know. That is why it is important to get involved with student organizations and other campus events and activities. They allow us to enrich our minds and open our eyes to things that are unfamiliar and perhaps uncomfortable for us. That is what college is all about. Ultimately, we can all help promote and celebrate cultural diversity.
