Forget That Flyers-Penguins Game At Beaver Stadium
I've written about this a couple of times because it would be AMAZING to have the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers play an outdoor game at Beaver Stadium. Plus it would easily set a record for the largest crowd to see a hockey game. But, NHL commissioner Gary Betteman put the kibosh on that idea earlier this week. DAMNIT! First no Fergie and now no outdoor hockey game. Guess we'll have to just settle for football.

So in a press conference before game one of the Stanley Cup finals in Detroit this week, Betteman said, “We’re not going to overdo it" in reference to the outdoor games.

"The possibility of having the Penguins play the Flyers at some point in Happy Valley is intriguing, and it’s on the list of possibilities that we are and will explore," said Betteman. "I also have no doubt that if you played every year in Happy Valley the weather would not cooperate every year. These games are difficult to put on. They’re risky. They’re expensive. And they’re dependent on things that are not within our control.”

So it looks like it's not happening anytime soon, but Betteman said he isn't against the teams meeting up at Penn State, but would like to see the game indoors, preferably in the Bryce Jordan Center. Well, there's a problem with that, you can't make ice at the BJC.

Earlier this month there was a Collegian article which talked about the Penn State ice hockey team's inability to move to Division I hockey. One of the reasons is Greenberg Ice Pavilion, where the team plays, only holds 1,500 fans. The obvious solution would be to have the team play in the BJC. But as former Icer's coach Joe Battista points out in the piece, the original plans for the BJC called for it to be a basketball and hockey arena. But when it was deemed to expensive, the plans to put a hockey surface in was nixed. Battista also said it would take six months to re-haul the area to allow hockey.

So, way to have that statement thought out Gary Betteman. But what should I expect from the guy that puts his league on Versus.
