So Sarah Palin came to town Tuesday and held a rally at Rec Hall, but unlike some other rallies this election season, Palin's was a "closed" event - meaning you had to get tickets to get in. Well, guess who couldn't get a ticket? None other than Penn State President Graham Spanier. Guess there was no need for a washboard player.
According to abcnews.com, Spanier's office attempted to make arrangements for Spanier to meet Palin, to which a campaign aide responded "He's a big Democrat. Why would he want to meet Palin?"
Ouch! Snubbed in your own school Graham, that's gotta hurt.
The GOP is pretty notorious for only letting "the base" into rallies like this, so they're going to want to keep out someone who might cause a fuss, but I really doubt the president of a major university is going to get on stage and make a fool of Palin ... she can do that herself. Ooooowa!
The Palin people say they in fact did invite Spanier to the event, but the university is denying that that actually happened. Immediately following the snub, the university announced Spanier had a scheduling conflict to avoid some "awkwardness" over not being allowed at the event, but now the school seems to say that Palin aide Russ Bermel is just a douche.
Oh well, better luck next time Graham. Maybe Valerie Plame can get you in next time

Stumble It

Old Main claims that they tried to diffuse the situation by not pushing for a meeting between Spanier and Palin after they were rebuffed. But, they turn around and talk to the media which, in fact, has the effect opposite to defusing the situation. Why?
I can only speculate, but I see three possibilities.
First, Spanier has been getting cozy with the Bush administration. He's carried water for Gates on Minerva and he's sitting on the FBI's national security board. Now its pretty clear that Obama will win next week and Spanier want to make an opening with the new guy on the block.
Second, Spanier's massive ego was bruised and he lashed out.
These are not mutual exclusive possibilities, but I assure you that if Graham thought for a moment that McCain could win he'd have kept quite no matter how badly his feelings were hurt.
Third, Graham's just started blogging over at CHE. This indicates to me that he's decided to reach out to the netroots. What better way to get their attention than to slam McCain.
The truth is with Spanier everything is calculated. He's no better than McCain. Posted 10/30/2008 8:49 PMReply

I think your researching skills could use some work. Posted 10/30/2008 10:45 PMReply
wow.. "Anonymous" that says Palin is more qualified than the other 3, you are truly, truly retarded. Palin does not run the Coast Guard. What is wrong with you? Posted 10/31/2008 12:18 AMReply
This post is so idiotic I don't know where to begin correcting you. First of all, Sarah Palin was never "in charge of the coast guard" youâre literally just making shit up and passing it off as trueâ¦which really makes your post about âresearchingâ especially ironic. Second of all, please don't compare her to Reagan with the president turned actor example. Reagan was the governor of one of the biggest states in the country (California) for nearly 8 years before running for president and perhaps more importantlyâ¦he wasnât an idiot. Two weeks before the election Palin answered the question âWhat does the VP do?â incorrectly. As far as the great things sheâs done for Alaska, Sarah Palin has the single highest earmark request per person than any other state. Amusing considering that anti-earmark spending is one of the tickets biggest platform. In just two years in office she was found to have violated ethic rules of the state. She initially lobbied for the bridge to nowhere. She allegedly charged the state travel expenses while working for home. She made victims of rape pay for their for rape kits. She raised sales tax by half a percent and left Wasilla in $20 million in debt. Is that what your research told you?
Whatâs worse than an uneducated voter? An uneducated voter that thinks theyâve got it all figured out. Posted 10/31/2008 05:23 AMReply
Even if this is the case, I still contend that Graham would never have gone public with this story if McCain were winning.
