It Wasn't The First Time Penn State Was Leapfrogged...

You probably know by now that Penn State was leapfrogged by Texas Tech to take the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings, while Penn State remained at No. 3.

Like the title says, it wasn't the first time.

This is the fifth time that Penn State has been snubbed by BCS voters. It happened most recently in 1994, when Penn State went undefeated, but were denied playing for the National Championship. This has happened so much to Penn State that I knew, watching Texas Tech defeat Texas, that Penn State would not move up to No. 2 in the BCS.

So, what is the problem with the voters? Do they not like Penn State? Do they not respect JoePa? Are they just stupid? Well, its a combination of all those things. I'm going to throw politics in as possible factor as well, going back to when Nixon said on national television that Texas deserved to play for the championship and the voters listened to him, denying another chance to the Nittany Lions.

The real reason is, the voters view Penn State as having a weak schedule. They would cite that the only "real" teams Penn State has played were Wisconsin and Ohio State. The other thing hurting Penn State is that the Big Ten is extremely weak this year. Out of 11 teams, four are ranked in the BCS.

Looking at these two arguments, they are understandable. Penn State did play a few cupcake teams and the Big Ten is putting up a weak showing this year. But, I don't think anyone of the voters sat down and thought about Penn State before they voted. In fact, I know they didn't because Penn State would have been ranked second had they thought about this team. This undefeated team is led by an 82 year old. How many senior citizens do you know that could coach a world class football team? I know one. His name is Joe Paterno. Does anyone have any respect for this man? He is leading a team on a possible National Championship run and is currently the most winningest coach in Division I football history.

The second argument I make for Penn State is that they have won all the games they were supposed to win. They didn't pull a USC and lose to Oregon State, they manhandled them the second week of the season, 45-14. There wasn't even a question who was going to win those games, Penn State crushed all of them.

It's a simple equation. A respectable 82 year old coach leading a team that won all of its games should get a chance to play for the National Championship. All I am asking is for Joe Paterno be shown some respect, a chance for the Nittany Lions and for the pollsters to be fired.
