Since when did it become okay to bash the president… or the candidates for president at that? Over the past eight years the country has given George W a beating, some of it his own fault, but the southern-drawling, often-stuttering man is still in charge of our country, jokes or not. Last night in a bit on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart brought to our attention the crazy accusations currently being made against Senator Obama, but in a more laughter-inducing, satirical way than the typical news program. In case you haven’t caught either report, here are the country’s latest Obama-bashing topics and their shutdowns.
1. Michelle Obama uses the word “whitey” and it’s caught on tape during a speech. This allegedly happened in the end of 2004 at a women’s event and Trinity United Church. No one has been able to show a clip of the video, it is just said to exist. Obama’s people say there is no such tape. This one happens to be a little shady on both sides.
2. Something that isn’t so shady? Michelle Obama’s thesis from her days at Princeton University. Most of the subject matter allows for people to believe she may actually be a black supremacist. If you happen to stumble across it, I’ll leave you to your own interpretation; however, I was a little unsettled when I read some of the excerpts.
3. Obama is hiding his birth certificate. Obama for America denies this and has a copy of his birth certificate posted on one of their sites, but even so, who would believe that a presidential candidate would actually be hiding his birth certificate and getting away with it? Don’t you think the United States would check to make sure the Democratic candidate for president is, in fact, an American before they let him get this far in the campaign?
4. The religious issues…I don’t even think there is enough space for me to get into them fully. People accuse Obama of being a Muslim, not a Christian. Truth? He wasn’t born or raised Muslim and is a committed Christian. But hold on; aren’t we allowed to be of any religion we want in America? We’ve never had a Muslim president, but we sure gave Kennedy hell for being Catholic and he made it into office and did some great things.
5. Last one. Obama won’t say the Pledge of Allegiance or put his hand over his heart during the Pledge. Again, I’m pretty sure the government would be aware if a presidential candidate was so unpatriotic as to snub the Pledge of Allegiance. Here he is, leading the Pledge: http://my.barackobama.com/page/invite/patriot.
What I say isn't likely to make a difference, but it will hopefully put some spiteful minds to rest. It’s not unlike the opposite party to take stabs at their competition, but these are pushing the line between possible and possibly ridiculous. Oh, but I did appreciate the humor that came from the fist bump between Michelle and Barack Obama on a televised campaign speech. Best romantic moment in politics EVER. Pounnnnd it!
