We received an e-mail the other day touting the services of the Penn State Career Services Center. It said "employers are eager to interview graduating seniors" and you can use the Bank of America Career Services Center to conduct these interviews with the numerous companies recruiting at Penn State. So, by logging onto their website, you can find out what companies are coming and schedule a time to meet them for an interview in the nice new building. And it'll only cost you $15! Because obviously you don't pay enough fees over the course of your college career.
The Bank of America Career Services Center is a very nice building (it better be, Bank of America takes enough of our money every month from our credit card bill). And it's probably better to conduct a job interview there than in your dirty apartment or in the HUB. But should you really have to pay $15 for the use of Career Services "On-Campus Interviewing" (OCI)?
In order to take advantage of OCI, you must first register with Career Services' online service. Then, if you wish to sign up for the OCI service, it'll cost you $15. But don't worry, it's charged right to your bursar account, so it'll not like you're really being charged, right? Just another bill for your parents!
But not only does the service cost $15, Career Services also wants to treat you like a child if you misbehave and miss an interview. According to their policies and instructions, if you schedule an interview with a prospective employer, and fail to cancel by 8:30 a.m. two days prior to the interview, "your interview requesting/scheduling privileges will be withheld until a letter of explanation/apology is written to the employer. This letter and a stamped envelope addressed to the employer must be provided to Career Services. [Career Services] will mail it with [their] cover letter and reactivate your registration."
You probably have to write "I will not skip an interview" 1000 times on a chalk-board too.
