Not Gone Yet? Oh Vicki, You're So Fine!
New PSU StudentAffairs VP approved, but is former VP Tripony and her hubby, aka trailing spouse/six-figure carry-on baggage Mike Meacham, preparing for legal case against Spanier?

President Spanier doesn't realize the forces gathering against him. The new VP for Student Affairs was recently approved by the Board, but that's just the beginning.

Remember former Student Affairs VP Vicky Tripony? (the lady who fought with JoePA over control of judicial affairs, and tried to take over the student radio station??)

She resigned, umm, rather abruptly last fall. It seems she left some baggage behind, however. Her husband, Mike Meacham, got a made-up job on campus as part of the "trailing spouse" program.
This involves creating a new, needless position for the spouse of an incoming admin or faculty member. In this case, a near six-figure salary, just to keep hubby happy and occupied. With Vicky gone, however, her significant other baggage remains, free to roam campus (and Harrisburg) and exact revenge for the injustice done to the Mrs. (he's a former kansas local politician).

The real story here, though is the ludicrous trailing spouse program, estimated to increase payroll costs by almost 35%! This program is the single greatest factor driving tuition costs into outer space.

If you want to be a real hero to Penn State, let your legislators know about this outrageous program.

"...estimated to increase payroll costs by almost 35%"

Estimated by who, exactly? That's an awfully high number, and it'd be nice if we knew where it came from. If it's true, then there's certainly a scandal, but simply throwing a number out there without saying where it came from is really sloppy.

I thought only SOS that liked ganging up on Tripony or is she universally disliked by everyone now? Posted 05/22/2008 08:42 AMReply
Erroneous
I think most of the students are too apathetic to know who Triponey even IS or even that she "served" at Penn State at all. But no, there are people outside of SOS who dislike her. Me, for one. Posted 05/22/2008 11:43 AMReply

VickTrip's Direct Impact on Students: Take a look at how she changed how the Student Activity Fee was funded. She has final say on everything...pretty terrible for that use of money. Posted 05/22/2008 2:26 PMReply

It's nonsense, of course. As any academic administrator at PSU knows, spousal hires are an integral part of many faculty recruitments these days. Meacham entered a vacant position for which there was a need for someone with his expertise. Ask the faculty in that department. He was a perfect fit for the need and by all accounts has done an outstanding job. Posted 06/13/2008 1:12 PMReply
