Penn State Transgender Task Force Wants University to Cover Costs of Operation

For the most part, college health insurance tends to be rather poor. The network coverage is usually limited, and it’s often too expensive. Still, at many universities, it’s a requirement, so students have no choice but to incur extra debt for very little benefits.

Among the many, many things not covered by student health plans are transgender operations. However, Denise Conner, a member of Penn State’s Coalition of LGBTA Graduate Students, intends to change all that by lobbying against the University.

The Daily Collegian reports:

Conner and the task force are researching policies of other universities and companies in the hopes of finding a solution, she said.

For employees, transgender care is explicitly prohibited. For students, transgender care is not explicitly excluded under university health insurance. Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS) is excluded under coverage for both employees and students, Conner said.

Current health insurance is in violation of the Penn State Administrative Policy AD42 Statement on Nondiscrimination and Harassment, Conner said.

The non-discrimination act states "the Pennsylvania State University prohibits discrimination and harassment against any person because of age, ancestry, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran status."

Hmm – not sure penny-pinching stinginess on the behalf of the university warrants outcries of discrimination, but the point is still valid.

Hopefully, the task force succeeds, because it’s wholly unfair that other Big Ten schools, like Michigan, do pay for transgender operations.

No Penny-the point is not valid. No state should pay for sexchanges.Thats ridiculous.
Not discriminating means not calling gay or transgendered people "****s" etc and treating them with respect & kindness. It doesnt mean paying for sex changes.
Sex changes are not necessary medicine ie:getting life threatening tumor removed.
People can't try to claim whatever they want from others & then use the discrimination card when they dont get it.
In that case couldn't i say i want the university to cover costs for rhinoplasty(nose job) for me and breast implants & if they don't agree then why can't i say they're discriminating against smallbreasted women because they wont cover for it?
The people wanting gender changes could claim that it affects their psychological health that they're not in the other genders body but couldnt i also claim that having(for example) small
breasts affects my psychological health and that it makes me not feel womanly enough?
Or shouldnt an older person then ask the uni to pay for a facelift for them & if they say no then claim that their discriminating against age?
See how ridiculous it sounds?
Why should it be ok for one group & not for the other?
People should speak up,not give into the fear factor and not allow this to happen.
The university should cover necessary health procedures.Which means for example if someone gets thyroid cancer then they should get dedicated, good medical treatment whether straight, gay, old, young, any nationality etc,any religious background etc.
THAT is what not being discriminated against means.
