The Nittany Lions clinched the Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl berth by routing the Michigan State Spartans, 49-18.
This was a big game for the Nittany Lions with this being the senior's last home game and this win allowing the team to head west with the Big Ten Championship and the Land Grant Trophy.
This game really belonged to the defense, who shut down this potent Spartans offense very effectively. RB Javon Ringer was held to just 42 total rushing yards rushing and QB Brian Hoyer was intercepted twice, once by Lydell Sargeant and once by Anthony Scirrotto, sacked three times, and scored no touchdowns. The defense really had to step up for this to be a Penn State win and they did. The secondary improved greatly from their last few games and stepped up to make this a big win.
The offense was on fire in this game. Darryl Clark threw the ball for a career-high 341 yards and four touchdowns. Evan Royster gained 79 yards on 12 attempts, Deon Butler caught three passes for three touchdowns for 133 yards, Jordan Norwood caught the ball five times for 127 yards, and Derrick Williams caught the ball four times for 51 yards and a touchdown. This offense really clicked in this game and were able to score big. This performance reminded me of their play in the first few games of the season, where nobody could shut this unit down.
This game was a collective effort, with the offense and the defense playing in sync for one goal, well, actually three goals: a Big Ten Championship, a Rose Bowl berth, and the Land Grant Trophy. This was a perfect way to end the season and a perfect way for the seniors to go out like they came in four years ago: with a Big Ten Championship. See you in Pasadena.
THE GOOD: The Nittany Lions
THE BAD: The MSU offense
THE UGLY: The box-like structure known as the Land Grant Trophy
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darryl Clark
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lydell Sargeant
UP NEXT: The Lions travel to Pasadena to take on the PAC 10 champion in the Rose Bowl on January 1
